Direct Care Workers currently receive low wages with little or no benefits. The COVID pandemic required DCWs to risk their own health in order to keep serving clients. DCWs are also prone to experience compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is defined as a condition characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion leading to a diminished ability to empathize or feel compassion for others, often described as the negative cost of caring. The combination of this has caused a nationwide shortage of direct care workers.
This crisis has negatively affected the ability of individuals with disabilities to live independently. It also affects the elderly and anyone who requires help to live independently.
Not only are clients of DCW suffering but their families as well. Many professionals depend on DCW to care for their loved ones so they can perform daily tasks required by their careers.
This blog was created to raise awareness about direct care workers. It’s time to treat direct care work as a career path instead of a vocational job.
This blog works to recognize and raise awareness for our Colorado Direct Care Workers. Direct Care Workers (DCWs) are paid workers whose primary job responsibility is to provide care and assistance with activities of daily living to support elders and individuals with varying abilities' needs for safety and wellness, connection, independence and a meaningful life. These are their stories. Share your own story by emailing dcwstorysharing@gmail.com!
